Archie Brown with his splendid gruff soul tones and his exquisite rootsy songs is so underrated. With his long-time sidekick Raffa’s (Pat Rafferty) they are quite possibly the Uk’s version of Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham. On such tunes as “Bad Things Happen” a love song with regret & “Temporary Arrangement” they could easily be covered as classic country soul numbers. His Nothing Personal” too… & it was a lovely start to a relaxed and most enjoyable Sunday evening at The Jumpin Hot Club … this time in the wonderful Live Theatre main room .
Amanda Platt and her band The Honeycutters from Asheville North Carolina brought over a warm country glow on this early September night. The country barroom band name checked the state, in one of their songs to kick off …”it’s a long ride home” & provided top class songs and musicianship throughout the evening. What makes them special of course is Amanda’s gorgeous voice & her lyric too. Actually for me her solo spot was another high spot and the song Americas Blues” about the dreadful state of American politics at this present time again hit the spot. Also “Burn” about the life of a prostitute, with the line ” What goods a roof when the roofs caving in”
A closing highlight was the Dan Penn song “Do Right Woman” covered by many artists as a kind of tribute to Aretha Franklin. Amanda handled this one with a wry country tinge, making a great night of music even greater.
