We have just heard the sad news that legendary Singer Songwriter – Daniel Johnson based in Waller, Texas has died. Whilst it was sad news and at 58 years, far too young, we were really honoured to have him play for us in May 2005 at Evolution Festival ( J’Hot Club @ Cluny) . Quite a feat really as it was extremely difficult getting him to UK for a one – off Festival & in such a small venue too. As you may know Daniel suffered from Bipolar & all that entails , so Id been working on the show since 2004 directly with his older brother and uncle in Waller Texas. They set up an arts exhibition in London afterwards & as the guy from Spiritulized was curating the Evolution Festival, agreed to play it. For the journey over from USA I got his brother to come too, but got a call from him at London Kings Cross saying that Daniel had completely disappeared.The police were called & luckily he was found wandering near Kings Cross & we got him on the train up here. The show support was a guy called Lone Pigeon, a cult songwriter from Fife ( King Creosote’s brother) & with his band waiting, Lone refused to get on the stage – so I just pushed him on and luckily he played. When Daniel did do his short set he addressed the audience at the beginning & end with “Hello London” & “thanks London , thank you London you’ve been great”. It was actually a huge relief when Daniel just played & he did “True Love will Find You In The End” as a fitting and wonderful finale. RIP Daniel.
