SHIPCOTE & FRIENDS + Special Guest BRENDAN CROKER

Local favourites Shipcote & Friends celebrate the release of their latest album “Perambulatin In Gateshead” in the perfect surroundings of The Studio & their gentle Geordie country swing is the perfect match. They will have Malcolm Mac Master (John Miller Country Casuals) with them on pedal steel too

Brendan Croker will be the evening’s very special guest. This wonderful songster was at the Summertyne Fest outdoor stage serenading the crowd & when the occasion arose, was seen playing as a duo with Steve Phillips for decades. He was also in Notting Hillbillies with Steve & one Mark Knofler !

Shipcote and Friends are the ideal music for a sunny afternoon – mellow and smooth like a fine oak-aged whisky. A great selection of engaging songs, very tastefully arranged, and the Drystone audience loved them. A real connoisseur’s band. Thanks again - Dave Camlin Solfest - Aug 2013

MADISON VIOLET (Canada) + The Kentucky Cowtippers

Madison Violet have a sound all of their own, which has been described as both tumbleweed country & folk pop. Both hailing from small towns in Canada, Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac have chosen a special musical path; one that channels their parent’s record collection that comprised of the likes of Neil Young and Dolly Parton. They have beautiful voices and therefore wonderful harmonies but it is the craft of writing exceptional songs that is an equal strength. They will be here with as a full 4 - piece band for this special visit

To quote The Irish Times: “There is something magical about duets, the way the voices interlace to create a sound that is neither one singer nor the other but something else altogether. Canadian duo Madison Violet make it sound the easiest thing in the world”

Dan Stuart ( USA - ex Green On Red) with Antonio (Sacri Cuori) + Kathleen Haskard ( USA)

Dan Stuart -

is best known for being the leader of 80's groundbreakers Green on Red featuring Chuck Prophet, and half of the duo Danny & Dusty with Steve Wynn. His artistic efforts have been praised (and mocked) in the pages of the LA/NY/London Times as well as Rolling Stone, NME and countless others. His songs have been performed by artists as varied as Manic Street Preachers, Richmond Fontaine and Vivian Girls: strange bedfellows for sure.
In a page from B.Traven's life, Mr. Stuart has been living under the name of Marlowe Billings in Southern Mexico. Rumors of an escape from a New York mental health facility have not been denied. What is certain, is that Mr. Stuart has been spotted playing gigs around the world, thoroughly surprising himself and others.

He hits Newcastle with his Italian buddy Antonio, the guitarist from spaghetti westerner’s Sacri Cuori .

Kathleen Haskard (USA) Kathleen is a native Angeleno. a Californian sinner/ songwriter and political activist who divides her time between the rooftops of southeast London and a MoHo (motorhome) in a canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains above Ventura County Line

.“Differently beautiful, her voice, phrasing & song structure dangle between the Americana of Lucinda Williams and the punkrock of Patti Smith. Don’t Tell is a successful roots album with a hard, sound message….a plate which everyone must have in their plate cupboard”Jon Bream – Minneapolis Star Tribune -

Kathleen’s songwriting collaborators include , Chuck Prophet, Eric Lowen & Dan Navarro (The Bangles, Pat Benetar, The Temptations, The Four Tops), Stacey Earle & Sandy Stewart (Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner, Belinda Carlisle, Bow Wow Wow)

Barrence Whitfield & The Savages (USA) + King Salami and the Cumberland 3

Barrence Whitfield is a full-throttle soul screamer in the spirit of Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, and Solomon Burke. He has been described as the owner of one incredible pair of lungs, with limitless energy and unmatched enthusiasm for his music and his audience. Barrence is a rarity in this business–one of a few black, rock 'n roll singer/entertainers who Spin Magazine says maintains a frenzied performance. The Savages lay down a groovy racket that’s so thick and greasy, you’ll need to keep moist towelettes near the hi-fi. Barrence and the boys are to soul what the Cramps are to Rockabilly—a gateway musical drug to America’s demented roots underbelly. Whitfield is a performer so consumed with satisfying his audiences that he has been called ‘crazed, frenetic and completely unhinged.’

Cahalen Morrison and Eli West ( USA ) + Skylark Song

Seattle’s Cahalen Morrison and Eli West make another visit here (they played Summertyne 2012). Inspired by mountain music they are one of the hottest acts to emerge out of the traditional US roots music scene. The excellence of shared lead & sibling-styled harmony vocals go perfect with their claw-hammer banjo, mandolin, bouzouki & guitar. When people talk about their Appalachian music, terms like gorgeous, amazing, gentle, lush, sophisticated, soulful, organic and earthy, all get bandied around.

Both are multi-instrumentalist’s - Cahalen is equally at home playing finger style guitar, lap slide, and claw hammer banjo while Eli West, a Suzuki Violin kid is busy sitting in on mandolin with many A list – folk, country- roots musicians.Their debut album established the duo as a major force. Equally at home singing vintage R&B/rock n' roll Hannah formed The Relatives with her London based cousin Lou last year. They call the music Sultry blues grooving with a honky-tonk swagger, a cool drink of water under a blistering rock'n'roll sun.......

An Evening With ELIZA GILKYSON (USA)

Eliza Gilkyson is a politically minded, poetically gifted singer-songwriter, who has become one of the most respected musicians in folk and Americana music circles. The Grammy-nominated artist has appeared and has toured with Richard Thompson & Mary Chapin Carpenter. She has been inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame alongside legends Willie Nelson & Townes Van Zandt. Eliza’s songs have been recorded and performed by such greats as Rosanne Cash & Joan Baez.
The daughter of legendary songwriter Terry Gilkyson, an accomplished songwriter whose songs include “Memories Are Made of This” (as covered by Dean Martin) “Look Me Over Closely” (White Stripes) and such standards as “Green Fields,” “Marianne” and “The Bare Necessities” (from the Disney film Jungle Book). Eliza grew up in Los Angeles knowing that her life would revolve around music.

After living and recording in the Southwest , Eliza settled down in Austin, Texas, releasing her first album on
Red House Records in 2000. In the past year, Eliza has been busy, recording two new albums. Last summer she released the Billboard-charting Red Horse with friends and now she releases Roses at the End of Time, her first new solo recording in three years.

Eliza travels with guitarist Jim Henry ,who's usually seen with Tracy Grammer & is occasional sideman to Mary Chapin Carpenter.

QUOTES

“Few folk singers, even those from the original folk revival, have been able to combine social consciousness with
musicality as well as Eliza Gilkyson. She merges strong songwriting talent with commanding vocals to create music that has immediate appeal as well as lasting intellectual impact.”

– Vintage Guitar

“like the master writer she is, Gilkyson cuts through the jungle of posturing leftist verbiage and conservative spin…She packs a political punch that is as entertaining and blue-collar as the work of Woody Guthrie”

AN EVENING WITH PAUL BRADY & special guest Lisbee Stainton

Paul Brady, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is one of Ireland’s most highly regarded and successful artists. He crosses musical boundaries again and again, incorporating folk, rock, blues traditional Irish & classic pop styles into his songwriting. His live performances, whether solo or full band, incorporate songs from his extensive catalog of 40 years. Often classified as a musicians’ musician, Paul Brady’s songs have been covered by a huge array of major artists from Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner, Cher and Maura O’Connell, to Brookes and Dunne, Joe Cocker and Carlos Santana.
He began to write songs in the early 80s and has since forged a reputation as one of Ireland’s finest singer-songwriters, releasing many popular and critically acclaimed records. Songs such as The Island, Crazy Dreams, Nothing But The Same Old Story, Nobody Knows, Follow On, The Long Goodbye, The Homes of Donegal and Paradise Is Here have, over the years, given joy and emotional sustenance to generations of Irish at home and abroad.
Soon after the release of ‘Hard Station’, his first album of his own compositions in 1981, his songwriting began to come to the attention of artists worldwide and his first ‘cover’ came the following year when Carlos Santana recorded ‘Night Hunting Time’. Since then his songs have been sung by many international artists including Tina Turner, Cliff Richard, Cher, Carole King, Art Garfunkel, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker, Trisha Yearwood and Phil Collins and, closer to home, Ronan Keating, Joe Dolan, Dickie Rock, Maura O’Connell, Liam Clancy and Mary Black.
An evening with Paul Brady on stage is a captivating experience, and this great talent can easily be compared to his contemporaries such as Jackson Browne, Van Morrison, Richard Thompson and Mark Knopfler.
Paul continues to garner huge respect from the younger writers and performers of today, including Glen Hansard, Sarah Siskind and Shawn Colvin are among the many that hold him in high regard.

PETE MOLINARI + Support

Pete Molinari’s fourth album 'Theosophy' sits at that point where, as Muddy Waters put it, the blues had a baby and they called it rock ‘n’ roll. Here soul, country, blues and rockabilly collide in perfect symbiosis. The songs tell tales of life, love, literature and compact the singer/songwriter’s many decades of musical influences and his globe-spanning, wandering lifestyle down into a collection that is as uplifting as it lush, as classic-sounding as it is contemporary-minded.

Those in the know know and without the fanfare of hype, Pete can count among his fans – amongst others - Bruce Springsteen, Ray Davies, Paul Weller, Jools Holland, Bob Dylan, Richard Hawley, The Black Keys and Elvis Presley’s backing band The Jordanaires, with who Molinari recorded in Nashville in 2009. Simply put he has risen to become one of Britain’s finest country, blues and rock ‘n’ roll singer.

Now 2014 sees Pete back living in the Medway Delta – well, Rochester, Kent - after stints residing in Nashville, New York and London. With 'Theosophy' his most assured, diverse and richest album yet the open road beckons once again.

HOLLIS BROWN (USA) + Dennis Ellsworth ( Canada)

Born and bred in New York City, Hollis Brown embarked on a pilgrimage to Nashville to capture their authentic sound. They shacked up for two weeks in the backyard cabin/studio of producer Adam Landry (Deer Tick, Diamond Rugs), and found themselves.

SPIN writes "Hollis Brown make music that sounds just as alive today as it would've in 1966 and will 40 years from now." This should come as no surprise, as principal songwriters Mike Montali (vocals) and Jon Bonilla (lead guitar) grew up listening to the classics. These native New Yorkers were born in the late '80's when the city was identified by its grit, passion, and authenticity. The combination of an urban upbringing and throwback musical influences of traditional blues contributed heavily to the band's sound. However, contrary to most blues-influenced bands, Hollis Brown leans heavily toward melodic pop as well. You'd be hard-pressed to find a Beatles song these boys don't know by heart, and you can hear it in the music.

Dennis is from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He has real depth in his songwriting abilities and a very soulful (and haunting) country voice to boot. He is likened in many respects to fellow Canadaian Ron Sexsmith. Dennis toured the UK for the first time last summer and opened for part of John Smith's tour His new album 'Hazy Sunshine' will be released in time for the tour.

AN EVENING WITH SAM BAKER (USA)

Sam's been here enough times now. Every music buff should know just how good this songster based in Austin Texas is....here's the great man

"In 1986 I was on a train in Cuzco, Peru that was blown up by terrorists. It killed the people I was sitting with. I had a cut artery, brain damage, blown in ear drums and should have died but I didn't.

I had lots of surgeries. Lots of ups and downs. Then lots of jobs, lots of bills. I moved constantly. The east coast, the midwest, the desert. I tried to figure out what it means to be blown up - to survive when others die. I wrote a lot. It was mostly drivel. But with the drivel came songs. They were mostly about other people. Kids having kids, old people, drunks in love, a barber with no nose, strangers, friends, and lovers. But there were also songs about getting blown up.

My first record was mercy. It came out in 2004. In 2007 pretty world was released and in 2009 cotton. They formed a rough trilogy that I later called the mercy trilogy. The big theme was:

everyone is at the mercy of another one's dream

This new record is called say grace. It is the same as the other records but different. Just like life. The same but different.

To say grace means to say thank you. It means to be grateful for what is before me - for what I have. It means to not be bitter about what I don't have and really, to not be bitter about things I lost.

I turn 59 this year. Everyday is a miracle."

Sam

Wholesome?Maybe...Californian? Definitely...Goodness? No question.BUT Don't be fooled by the floaty dresses and the sunny Californian disposition, The Rainbow Girls will come and rock your room by force.

Equal parts Ronettes and Stooges, this 'Electric All-Lady Stomp-Folk Grand Band' have honed their raw bluesy-folk-dance craft by busking on the mean streets of absolutely everywhere. The joy that they get from playing is multiplied ten-fold as their sound fills an auditorium, the Rainbow Girls are more than a band - they're an infectious disease that you want to catch! Roots music has never been so much fun.

We know that they'll be a big hit with any audience because we've seen it happen, time after time. Drums, bass, guitar, accordion, uke, mandolin, washboard, harmonica, banjolele, tap dancing, massive harmony singing - all is combined in a whirling maelstrom of good times from which you will do well to come up for air.

PLUS
MARTY O'REILLY & THE OLD SOUL ORCHESTRA (trio)

A fresh irresistible modern take on the blues has been conjured up by Marty O'Reilly, who began his musical journey as a blues guitar player with his ear pressed close to the ancient hiss in the works of Blind Willie Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt, John Lee Hooker, Charlie Patton, and Leadbelly. Through extensive listening and studying of the early delta greats, O'Reilly developed a unique foundation onto which he would incorporate themes from influences in other musical veins such as John Fahey, Nick Drake, John Vandiver, and Tom Waits. Whether it be his original pieces, or his renditions of old American classics O'Reilly tells his story through an old and soulful voice, propelled by a sense of authentic emotional adrenaline.

Veterans of eight John Peel sessions, their 1979 masterpiece, Live at the Counter-Eurovision on their own People Unite label set a bench mark for UK reggae and ably demonstrated that the Southall group were more than a match for their Jamaican counterparts. Sharing bills with the Clash and the Ruts cemented their reputation as one of the countries most important bands, subsequent tours of Africa saw the band go global. Headline shows at Glastonbury kept them in the public eye, they remain today one of the biggest names in roots reggae both at home and across Europe. Alongside Steel Pulse and Aswad, Misty In Roots rank as the most important reggae band of their generation.

HAT FITZ & CARA ( Australia/ Ireland) + Support

Hat Fitz is a "veteran" wild man of the blues scene in Australia. He has a record 18 straight appearances at Byron's East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, a record that is not likely to ever be broken, and one which bears testimony to his amazing live performances and popularity with festival goers. The wonderful singer by the name of Cara Robinson is his partner proffesionally & personally...Cara draws on her soul background (she’s toured Europe and the United States with singers such as Jamiroquai and Corrine Bailey-Rae), and although blessed with a sensational voice she was not content to be labelled as ‘just a singer’. She has taken to drumming duties as well as washboard, flute and tin whistle, sometimes all at once.

simple, powerful, full of the inherent realism we've come to expect from these two, a stellar effort." - Samuel J. Fell (Rhythms / Rolling Stone).

Influences- Lead Belly, Bessy Smith, Robert Johnson, jessie Mae Hemphill, and the O'l catz.........
Skip James, Memphis Minnie, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Boy fuller.

Session Americana This band/collective of talented musicians based in Boston USA, craft an musical experience unlike any other. On stage is a collapsible bar table wired with microphones, a vintage suitcase recast as a kick drum, an old Estey field organ, a pre-war parlor guitar, a mandocello and all of its smaller siblings, a harmonica case fire damaged when Jack's bar went up in flames and graffitied by Depeche Mode roadies, and an assortment of other instruments that get passed around in this freewheeling modern hootenanny. The anything-could-happen feel of a Session show depends on craft that's not accidental or easily won; they bring a kind of ease and genuineness to this timeless music, sometimes presenting the latest batch of original songs, sometimes reaching back into depths of the American "song bag".

"Session Americana has developed into a travelling medicine show which eschews snake oil in favour of an ongoing grail quest for the perfect collaborative experience." -Hot Press ROI

“I'd give them 100 miles. That is to say, if they're playing anywhere within 100 miles of your home, you drive there and are grandly rewarded for your effort.” - David Greenberger

"Session Americana do things in their own way: they are a class act.”- Fatea UK

“(Love and Dirt is) a contemplative soul searcher boasting a contemporary edge cut with rustic twang; Session Americana comes up with some gems, full of folk’s honesty and rock’s urgency." -Boston Globe

DANIEL ROMANO & Band (Canada) + The Black Feathers

Mosey music is a study in contrasts. There's glitz and grit, reveling and wallowing, wretchedness and showmanship. Mosey music's pioneers wore their battered hearts on sequined sleeves. From Bakersfield to Galveston, the legends traded their tragicomic highs and lows for gold records and white Cadillacs. But that was then; the days of Buckaroos, Nudie Suits and various Hanks are over, save for the museum displays. To quote a George Jones title track, "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?"

Enter Daniel Romano, a songwriter who delivers mosey croonin' and hard luck storytelling. While references to marquee names like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard are apparent in Romano's music, the obvious influences certainly don't demystify his talent. Romano works with equal parts authenticity and creativity, and his musical world is rich with archetypes and archrivals, wry observations and earnest confessions.
